Wake Up!
It was incredible - at least 27 surfboards were broken (probably more ..) during the 2006 Australian Longboard Titles and the associated freesurfing sessions - such is the power of the West Australian swells.
The
majority of those boards would have been hand finished by craftsmen
with an understanding of how the board will perform in the relationship
between the board and the surfer.
The
boards broken were not those of first time surfers - but of surfers
with the experience of many year's dedication to the sport and an
understanding of the differences between the craft they ride. This was,
after all, the Australian Titles.
No doubt the majority of the owners of those boards would have wanted them replaced - but in todays market place, what would they replace them with - a handcrafted custom or an Asian replica?
This is becoming, in 2007 and onwards, an important choice to those within the surfing industry (ie the traditional handcrafted surfboard manufacturers) and has many ramifications that adversly affect the potential of the industry to survive - within Australia and overseas.

It is highly recommended that you read the article Wake Up and seriously consider where your next board will come from. Click on the button below to review the article.
The final decision is, as always, up to you.
